Sounkyo (層雲峡) is Northern Hokkaido’s largest hot springs resort and the main base of Kuro-dake. Major hotels have their own restaurants and common baths. In the autumn weekend, booking ahead is essential. Kamikawa (上川) is a stopover point en route to Sounkyo.

Sounkyo’s best budget minshuku offers private tatami-mat and bed rooms. Showers and toilets are shared. Meals are not served, but it has a shokudo on the ground floor and serves lunch. It is next door to the Kurodake-no-yu.
