A vast stretch of Sarobetsu (サロベツ) is dotted with wetlands, quiet marshes, sandy beaches and peaceful dairy farms. Colorful and lovely wildflowers bloom from late June to mid July, a refreshing wind heals the traveler’s heart.
Northern Hokkaido’s top dairy farming town of Toyotomi (豊富) is the main gateway for Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park and Japan’s northernmost onsen village. Don’t miss fresh milk and tasty ice cream.

Sarobetsu Wetland Center

About 6km west of Toyotomi Station, this wetland center has good exhibitions on the nature, environment and history. There is a peat museum and a dredger. Digging peat in the wetland was one of the main industries of the region from the 1970s to the 2000s. A 1km circular nature trail arc out from the center overlooking the wildflower garden.

10min by bus from Toyotomi Station / 30min by bike
About 6km east of JR Toyotomi Station, Japan’s northernmost onsen ‘village’ was discovered during the search for oil in 1926. Oily water is believed to be helpful in treating psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Day trippers head for the bathhouse Fureai Center (ふれあいセンター: closed Tue plus Thu every other week), where you can select for general bath and lukewarm bath for cure.
Okibosochi Grassland Ranch

30min by bike from Toyotomi Onsen
A few kilometers’ north of Toyotomi Onsen on the rolling hills, more than 1000 cows are grazed on this grand-scale grassland ranch from May to October. The views on the north side of the former rest house is particularly wonderful. It takes about an hour by bike from Toyotomi Station.
