On the east side of Shimukappu Village, Tomamu (トマム) is one of Hokkaido’s main resorts, with high-rise hotels and massive ski slopes. You can easily visit here by train on the JR Sekisho Line or by car on the Doto Expressway.
Sightseeing
Tomamu Resort operates free shuttles buses, timed to meet all trains, between JR Tomamu Station and the on-site hotels. If you can’t find buses at the station, call Tomamu The Tower’s reception (there is a free dedicated telephone at the platform). Otherwise, it is about a 20-minute walk to The Tower from JR Tomamu Station.

Tomamu is one of Hokkaido’s most accessible ski resorts, with its own train station at the base of slopes. There are 29 runs from beginner slopes to ungroomed areas on Tomamu-yama (1239m). Backcountry tours are ideal for off-piste skiing. Ski and snowboard lessons are available. Most slopes are closed by 4pm but a few are open to 6pm.
Unkai Terrace

From mid May to mid October, Tomamu’s longest gondola makes early morning runs up to the Unkai Terrace (sits at 1088m) from the Resort Center for breathtaking views over the unkai (sea of clouds) covered the mountains. There are several unique viewing platforms around the terrace. Hoshino Resort guests can take the gondola for free. There are free shuttle buses to the gondola station from its hotels.
Mina-Mina Beach

Tomamu’s tropical glass-fronted ‘beach’ has an indoor 80m waves pool, a shallow pool and the gender-segregated roten-buro (open-air baths) Kirin-no-yu with a sauna. Swimsuits are available for rent or purchase. Swimming is prohibited after 8pm but it is lit up beautifully. Hoshino Resort guests can use it for free. Free shuttle buses run to the beach from its hotels. No tattoos allowed.
