About 25km east of Obihiro, Ikeda (池田) is best known for its winemaking and a handy stopping-off point between Tokachi and Okhotsk regions. All trains on the JR Nemuro Line stop here.

Ikeda Wine Castle

Dating back to 1974 as Japan’s first winery, the town-managed Wine Castle (Wain-jo) is located diagonally behind JR Ikeda Station, on the pleasant hilltop overlooking the town. It has a wine cellar, maturing room, restaurant, shop and rooftop observatory. Of course you can taste wine of the day. Plum brandy is also popular souvenir with foreigners.

On the north side of Kiyomi Park, this simple onsen boasts Tokachi’s top saline springs. It is 1.2km north of the Wine Castle.
Tokachi-gawa Museum
十勝川資料館
12min walk from Ikeda Station
On the left bank of Toshibetsu-gawa in the town center, this small museum exhibits dioramas and flood control panes of Tokachi-gawa, the region’s main river across the vast plain. It is open on weekdays.

Tokachi Makiba-no-ie

Getting There
JR TRAIN
Get off the train at Ikeda Station.
The limited express trains Ozora run to Ikeda on the JR Nemuro Line from Sapporo (2hr 45min), Obihiro (17min) and Kushiro (1hr 15min). There are also local trains from Obihiro (30min) and Kushiro (1.5hr).
BUS
Tokachi Bus 17 runs to Rikubetsu from Obihiro Station bus terminal stop 7 via JR Ikeda Station.
Getting Around
TAXI
You will find the Wine Taxi (ワインタクシー) in the town center, just 100m ahead of JR Ikeda Station.
