Bordering on both Central and Eastern Hokkaido, this peaceful and tranquil village embraced by the majestic forest in the mountains. Shimukappu was once Hokkaido’s most inland village and hard to reach, but today you can easily visit here by train on the JR Sekisho Line or by car on the Doto Expressway.

Michi-no-eki Shizentaikan Shimukappu

Located at Shimukappu’s central crossroads, this michi-no-eki (roadside station) housing several restaurants and take-away shops. You will find beef steak, sausage, curry, burger and ice cream using local ingredients.
Yunosawa Onsen Mori-no-Shiki
湯の沢温泉 森の四季
11min by bus from Shimukappu Station
Surrounded by peaceful mountain forest, this perfectly rustic onsen is a nice place to chill out. The clean indoor bath and the restaurant are open to nonguests except Tuesday and Wednesday. A Furano-Shimukappu bus stops here.
Akaiwa Seigankyo
赤岩青巌峡
7.4km south of Shimukappu Station
About 5km southwest of the village center passed through the long tunnel, you will reach this stunning gorge following the clear stream Mu-kawa, filled with climbable red and blue megaliths. There are short trails.

Getting There
JR TRAIN
Shimukappu Station is on the JR Sekisho Line. All the limited express trains Tokachi and some Ozora from Sapporo (1hr 20min) stop here.
BUS
Three municipal buses (占冠村営バス) daily runs between Shimukappu and JR Furano Station (70min) via Yunosawa-onsen. There are also two buses daily except Sunday between Shimukappu and Ikutora Station (1hr) via JR Tomamu Station.
All buses stop at the Yakuba-mae (役場前) in front of Shimukappu village hall facing the michi-no-eki and JR Shimukappu Station (占冠駅前) on Route 237.
Getting Around
BICYCLE
Shimukappu Tourism Association inside the Michi-no-eki Shizentaikan Shimukappu has rental bikes throughout the year.
BUS
There are several Hidaka municipal buses (日高町営バス) daily, timed to meet trains from and to Sapporo, between JR Shimukappu Station and Hidaka-sogo-shisho (日高総合支所: 25min) via Yakuba-mae (役場前) in front of Shimukappu village hall.
