The leafy Maruyama Park is a favorite of both locals and tourists on the approach to Hokkaido Jingu from Maruyama-koen Station. You will find several interesting monuments in the forest. This is one of Sapporo’s best spot for hanami (cherry-blossom viewing) in early May. During warmer months, you can scale the peaceful mountain of Maru-yama (225m) in about an hour.

Sapporo’s grandest shinto shrine surrounded by forest of Maruyama Park, Hokkaido Jingu enshrined Kaitaku Sanjin (three deities of Hokkaido reclamation). It was established as Sapporo Jinja in 1869 and the name was changed to Hokkaido Jingu in 1964. Most visitors passes through Maruyama Park from the subway station.

Located on the south side of Maruyama Park, this large zoo has dozens of animals from all over the world, from Hokkaido to Asia and Africa. You can watch higuma (brown bears), Ezo-shika (deers), owls, wolves, polar bears, monkeys, elephants and giraffes. There are also feeding sessions, free guided background tours and a children’s zoo.
Okura-yama Ski Jump Stadium

This world-class ski jump stadium drops 307m with a land-slope angle of 35-degree. It was constructed in 1931 by Baron Okura Kishichiro and has hosted the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics. The ski-jump chairlift ascends to a stunning view over the city. The package ticket includes the return chairlift ticket and entry to the Sapporo Olympic Museum.

5min by bus from Nishi-nijuhatchome Station, get off at Chokoku-bijutsukan-iriguchi, then 10min walk
One of Japan’s most famed sculptors in the Showa period, Hongo Shin (1905-1980), born in Sapporo, set up a studio and a residence here in 1977. Today the main hall and the annex showcasing his works. It is about a 20-minute walk from Maruyama Zoo.
Asahiyama Memorial Park

At 137m, Asahiyama is a pleasant hilltop park with excellent views of the city, especially after dark. Pick up snacks from the on-site rest house. From here, you can hike up 4km-long trail to the top of Moiwa-yama (531m).

SUBWAY
From Odori, the Tozai Line runs to Maruyama-koen (5min) and Nishi-nijuhatchome (7min).
BUS
From JR Soen Station south gate, the hourly JR Bus 8 for Keimei Terminal (啓明ターミナル) pauses at Maruyama-koen Station (20min). JR passes are available for use.

From Maruyama-koen Station’s bus terminal (exit 2), JR Bus runs to the following destinations (JR passes are available for use):
● Kuramaru-go (くらまる号): Okura-yama Ski Jump Stadium (15min) via Maruyama Zoo main gate
● Bus 11: Moiwa-yama Ropeway (11min)
● Bus 13: Asahiyama-koen-mae (14min)
● Bus 15/16: Maruyama-nishimachi 2 (円山西町2丁目) or Maruyama-nishimachi-jinja-mae (円山西町神社前) via Hokkaido-jingu and Maruyama Zoo west gate.
