After passing through the dynamic Sekihoku Pass on Route 39 from Daisetsuzan National Park, Onneyu (温根湯) is a popular onsen village to break up a journey for Kitami or Akan-ko. There are a few onsen lodging along Muka-gawa.
Rubeshibe (留辺蘂) is the nearest train station to Onneyu Onsen.

In winter, you can see fishes from under the frozen open-air tank. Don’t miss ito (hucho perryi: species of freshwater salmon), Japan’s largest freshwater fish.

This isolated onsen ryokan boasts amazingly tsurutsuru (meaning skin-friendly) onsen and its riverside open-air baths surrounded by the tranquil forest. Japanese- and Western-style rooms are fully renovated. Guests can take a free shuttle from Onneyu bus stop by 5pm, if you request in advance.

Getting There

JR TRAIN

Limited express trains make the trip to Rubeshibe (留辺蘂) from Sapporo (4hr 15min), Asahikawa (2.5hr) and Abashiri (1hr 10min).

One daily rapid train (tokubetsu kaisoku) connects Asahikawa with Rubeshibe (3hr).

BUS

Rubeshibe (留辺蘂) bus stop is right opposite the train station. Onneyu (温根湯) bus stop is located near Onsen Yume-Hiroba (温泉ゆめ広場) riverside square near Oehonke and Hotel Tsutsuji-so.

The intercity bus Sunrise-go (サンライズ号) runs to Onneyu from Asahikawa (3hr 38min) via Sounkyo (66min), and Kushiro (4.5hr) via Akan-ko (2hr 50min). All the intercity buses stop at Rubeshibe. Compulsory reservation.

Getting Around

BUS

From Kitami, Kitami Bus runs to the Michi-no-eki Onneyu Onsen (道の駅おんねゆ温泉: 1hr) via JR Rubeshibe Station (26min) and Onneyu (温根湯).

From Michi-no-eki Onneyu Onsen, School Bus Mirai-go (スクールバスみらい号) runs to Takiyu-onsen (滝湯温泉: 10min), at the former Muka Relay Station (武華駅逓) on Route 39, about 850m south of Shiobetsu Tsurutsuru Onsen. The Mirai-go runs on weekdays (services available for tourists).
