Onuma Park (大沼公園) is designated as a quasi-national park and Southern Hokkaido’s most popular resort. From the late 19th-century, Hakodate’s expats have been visit O-numa for recreation.
With the double-peaked volcano of Koma-ga-take as a backdrop, the park is great place for picnics, cycling, skiing and camping around the picturesque lake of O-numa.
The park can easily be visited for the day from Hakodate.

A good place to access Onuma Park is at the antiquated little Onuma-koen Station, about 300m from the lakeside square. Here you will find some nature trails over the islets, cruise ships and cafes. You can wander around the rim of O-numa along a 14km paved road by bicycle (70min).

To admire the beautiful scenery of the lakes and mountains, consider a 30-minute cruises from Onuma Park. You can rent rowboats and swan-shaped pedal boats. In winter, you can try wakasagi-tsuri (smelt fishing), sledding and snowmobiling on the frozen lake.

Southern Hokkaido’s best ski area, Hakodate Nanae Snow Park has superb mountain, lake and ocean views from the 4km-long slopes. Even non-skiers can ride the 3319m, Japan’s longest gondola (15min) to the summit, from where you can spend time at the scenic Peak Cafe (open autumn & winter). Full equipment ski rental is available.

Getting There
JR TRAIN
Onuma-koen Station is serviced by the limited express train Super Hokuto between Hakodate (25min), Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (10min) and Sapporo (3hr).
Local trains run infrequently to Onuma-koen from Hakodate (45min) and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (20min). Note that local trains via Sawara branch line don’t go to Onuma-koen (get off the train at Onuma Station, from where it is a 15-minute walk to the lakeside).
BUS
Hakodate Bus operates three daily buses to Onuma-koen Station from Hakodate Station (70min) and Shikabe Kanketsusen-koen (34min). IC cards are available.
Getting Around
BICYCLE
Cycling can be enjoyable around the lake. Bikes can be rented from Mori Shoten Poroto-kan (森商店ポロト館) in front of JR Onuma-koen Station.
