About 10km north of Rumoi, Obira (小平) was also once a herring fishing village, and there were underground coal mines in Tappu (about 20km east of Obira) until 1967. From early July to mid August, the town’s sandy beach is the sparkling playgrounds.

Old Hanada Family Fishing Hut

Hokkaido’s largest wooden fishing hut like a herring palace, the 1905 Hanada-ke Ban-ya was once the temporary living quarters of the fisherman’s chief and some 200 seasonal workers. The hut contains large-scale fireplaces, beds and the owner’s gorgeous living room.

Adjacent to the fishing hut is this roadside station that has a roadside station, tourist information center, gallery and good restaurant. Along the coast is Nishin Bunka Rekishi Park with great ocean views.
Onishika Twin Beach

Onishika has a child-friendly ocean pool and a natural sandy beach, camping is also available from ¥2000 per tent. There are reputable seafood restaurants and stores around the beach. The nearest bus stop is Motohama.

BUS
Obira-chuo (小平中央) is the town center’s main bus stop on Route 232.
Engan Bus operates the intercity bus Tokkyu Haboro-go (特急はぼろ号) between Sapporo and Onishika (鬼鹿) near the Twin Beach, stopping at Obira-chuo, and Hanada-Ban’ya-mae (花田番屋前) in front of the Old Hanada Family Fishing Hut.
Local buses (for Haboro or Horonobe) from Rumoi-ekimae stopping at Obira-chuo, Yuttarikan-iriguchi (ゆったりかん入口), Hanada-Ban’ya-mae, Onishika, Onishika-Minato-machi 3 (鬼鹿港町3区), and Motohama (元浜) in front of Onishika Twin beach.

From Obira-chuo, the demand-responsive buses (小平町デマンドバス) run to Tappu (達布: 45min).
