Nukabira Gensenkyo (ぬかびら源泉郷) is a tranquil onsen village on the southeastern side of Daisetsuzan National Park. It is a good base for hiking and cycling around the artificial lake Nukabira-ko and makes a satisfying detour en route between Obihiro and Asahikawa via Sounkyo.
Sightseeing
There are no bathhouses, but most accommodation are open for higaeri nyuyoku (日帰り入浴: day use).
Higashi-Taisetsu Nature Center

Right opposite Nukabira Gensenkyo bus station, this modern and friendly nature center has interesting displays, such as stuffed animals and butterfly specimens, on the eastern side of Daisetsuzan National Park. It is a very good base for wander around Nukabira. Closed Wed.
Nukabira Gensenkyo Ski Area

Right next to the onsen town, it is a small ski area (unfortunately upper lifts and slopes are currently closed) overlooking the mountains. Tokachi Bus runs from JR Obihiro Station to the ski area. Full rental equipment is available.
Higashi-Taisetsu Arch Bridges

Constructed from 1936 to 1955 on the old JNR Shihoro Line, 34 concrete railway arch bridges along Route 274 are preserved as a historical heritage today. About 7km north of Nukabira, you can see the 130m-long Taushubetsu-gawa Bridge (built in 1937) on the lake when the water level is low. Higashi-Taisetsu Nature Center has bridge maps.
Nukabira Dam

About 2km east of Nukabira Gensenkyo, the 1956 Nukabira Dam is 76m-long and 293m-high in the deep valley. The dam itself is not open to all, but nearby the lookout offers good views of the lake and mountains. It is closed in winter.
Horoka Onsen Kanoya ♨︎

Hidden away at the end of the road above the gorge, 1km off Route 273, Kanoya is Tokachi’s most nostalgic and atmospheric onsen, with mixed indoor and open-air baths. On tap are waters from four different springs. Women are allowed to take modesty towels or use a female-only small indoor bath.
Mikuni-toge Pass
三国峠

Mikuni-toge is Hokkaido’s highest pass (1139m) on the border of Tokachi and Kamikawa regions. The pass makes a pleasant drive and rewards with expansive views of beautiful forest and surrounding mountains. There is also a good cafe (late Apr-early Nov). At the foot of the pass, the winding Matsumi-ohashi (三国大橋) bridge is a striking spectacle on the route.

This lovely, relaxed hostel with Japanese- and Western-style dorms is a good budget option close to Onsen Park. There is a small onsen bath. The owners offers several tours, such as hiking, cycling and go to Horoka Onsen after dinner.

Nukabira-Gensenkyo bus station has a ticket office.
Tokachi Bus 51 runs from Obihiro Station stop 6 to Nukabira-Gensenkyo-Ski-jo-mae (ぬかびら源泉郷スキー場前: 1hr 45min) via Shihoro, Kamishihoro, Nukabira-Gensenkyo bus station and Nukabira-onsen-koen-mae (ぬかびら温泉公園前).
From Asahikawa, the intercity bus North Liner Mikuni-go (ノースライナーみくに号) runs for Obihiro and passes through Sounkyo, Mitsumata (三股), Horoka-onsen-iriguchi (幌加温泉入口), Gonosawa (五の沢) and Nukabira-Gensenkyo (2.5hr).
