Japan’s most eastern mainland city, Nemuro (根室) is in the closest position to the 1150km-long Chishima Islands. Nature-rich, the 60km-long Nemuro Peninsula is a knob of brackish lakes, dramatic capes, wildflower gardens, fishing villages and rustic dairy farms between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk.
It is a perfect place for footpath hiking, wildlife cruising and birdwatching. Nemuro makes a fulfilling day trip from Kushiro.

Nosappu-misaki

納沙布岬

Nosappu-misaki is mainland Japan’s easternmost point and the earliest sunrise is 3.37am in mid June. On a clear day, you can see Kaigara-jima (just 3.7km east) and Suisho-to (7km east) belonging to the Chishima Islands across the strait. Summer mornings are often covered a sea mist. Nosappu Lighthouse is Hokkaido’s oldest lighthouse built in 1872 and reconstructed in 1930.

Shunkunitai

春国岱

Shunkunitai is an 8km-long scenic sandbank separates the Nemuro Bay and Furen-ko. Much of the landscape is covered with pine trees and beach roses. It is also called the ‘miracle sandbank’. From Shunkunitai Nature Center, winding boardwalks pass trough a waterfront wildlife sanctuary. The longest return hike for the sand dune takes about 3.5 hours.

On the southern shore of Furen-ko, this roadside station offers a grand panorama of the lake. There is a short wooden walkway and you can borrow a binocular. The restaurant Bird Pal is a naturally hit with birdwatchers look over the lake. You can try a wide variety of local dishes.

Originally constructed in 1875 (Meiji period) as Hokkaido’s second government-run ranch, this well-maintained park has three red brick silos dating from 1932. Meiji Park is about 2km east of JR Nemuro Station.

Kotohira Jinja

金刀比羅神社

12min by bus from Nemuro Station, get off at Shiomi-cho


Founded in 1806 by Takadaya Kahei, this shrine was modelled on Shikoku’s Kotohira-gu and was rebuilt in 1942. The shrine office has a small festival museum, housing a gorgeous golden mikoshi (portable shrine). Kotohira Jinja is about 2.5km north of JR Nemuro Station near the fishing port. 

Ochiishi-misaki

60min walk from Ochiishi Station


At the southern tip of Nemuro is this scenic cape looking over the ocean. A two-hour loop track starting near the beginning of the Old Ochiishi Radio Station built in 1923, taking in pine forest and wildflower gardens. Around mid June, sakai-tsutsuji (rhododendron lapponicum) blooms in the wetland.

Getting There

JR TRAIN

Nemuro Station is 2.5 hours from Kushiro by train on the scenic JR Nemuro Line (it also called the JR Hanasaki Line). The unstaffed Higashi-Nemuro Station (東根室駅) is Japan’s easternmost train station.

BUS

Nemuro Station bus terminal (根室駅前ターミナル) is opposite the train station. It sells bus tickets and passes.

An overnight bus service between Sapporo Odori Bus Center and Nemuro (8.5hrs+) via Attoko. Compulsory reservation. Intercity buses connect Nemuro with Kushiro (2.5hr), stopping at Attoko, Michi-no-eki Swan 44 Nemuro and Tobai (東梅).

AIR

Nemuro-Nakashibetsu Airport (根室中標津空港) is about 80km northwest of the city. Airport buses run from Nemuro to Nakashibetsu Airport (1hr 40min) via JR Attoko Station.

Getting Around

BUS

Local buses are operated by Nemuro Kotsu (根室交通). You can purchase a 1-day pass and a 2-day pass at the bus terminal.

If you don’t have a plan for explore the city in summer, the friendly bus tour Nosappu-go (ノサップ号) can save you time and money, plus can get you into the most attractions on the Nemuro Peninsula.

BICYCLE

There is a limited number of rental bicycles at Nemuro Tourist Information Center and Minshuku Tokiwa (民宿ときわ) near JR Nemuro Station. Bring ID.
