On the road to Eastern Shiretoko (Rausu) from Kushiro or Nemuro across the vast Konsen Plateau, Shibetsu (標津) is best known for its salmon fishing. Also, it is a main gateway of the Notsuke Peninsula facing the Nemuro Strait. There are a few attractions worth visiting around the town center.

Shibetsu is famous for its salmon fishing, this riverside aquarium has 17 species of salmon in tanks. You can climb to the observation tower for views of surrounding wetlands and Kunashiri-to. The museum is about 1.5km west of the bus terminal. Closed during the off-seasons.
Po-gawa Historical Place Forest Park

About 3km north of Central Shibetsu on Route 244, Po-gawa is a 630-hectare nature reserve dates back to 10,000 years ago. The visitor center showcases find from the archaeological digs, including tools and artifacts. You can explore to the Ichajin-Karikariusu Ruins in the hillside forest by walk or a free rental bicycle, through the wetland of Shibetsu Shitsugen.
Odaito & Notsuke Peninsula

20min by bus from Shibetsu-eigyosho bus terminal, get off at Odaito
The Notsuke Peninsula is a 28km-long, shrimp-shaped sandbank arcing out into the Nemuro Strait. Odaito is a small but lively fishing village on the western shores of the pleasant Notsuke Bay and serves as the cruise access point to the Notsuke Peninsula.
