At the northern edge of Kamikawa Region, the rustic riverside town of Nakagawa (中川) has a cozy onsen and an eco museum. During warmer months, you can enjoy camping, cycling and canoeing.
You can admire the landscapes of the autumn leaves in autumn, or Teshio-gawa covered with ice in winter.

Simply called Ponpira Onsen, nonguests can use an indoor onsen on the 2nd floor, with a medicated bath and a sauna. There is also a well-maintained campsite. It is about 1.5km south of JR Teshio-Nakagawa Station.

10min walk from Ponpira Aqua Ri-s Ing
If the weather is good, head to this hillside park (at 76m) on the north side of Ponpira Onsen overlooking Teshio-gawa. There are pleasant trails and viewing platforms. It is closed in winter.
Nakagawa Eco Museum Center

18min walk from Saku Station / 27min by fare-free bus from Teshio-Nakagawa Station (only on weekdays)
Across the river just a kilometer’s walk from JR Saku Station, this museum is inside an old junior high school and has an amazing collection of local meteorites. In winter, it will closed on Saturdays and holidays.

Getting There
JR TRAIN
Get off the train at Teshio-Nakagawa Station. This antiquated wooden station (unstaffed) was built in 1953.
● From Sapporo: take the limited express Soya (3hr 43min).
● From Asahikawa: take the limited express (2hr 13min).
● From Nayoro: take the local train (2hr).
Getting Around
BUS
On weekdays, there are fare-free municipal buses (住民バス) between JR Teshio-Nakagawa Station and Ponpira Aqua Ri-s Ing (or Nakagawa Eco Museum Center).
BICYCLE
Napauto Park Auto Camp-jo (ナポートパークオートキャンプ場) management office (tourism association) adjacent to Ponpira Aqua Ri-s Ing offers road bikes and MTB (bring ID). Reservation required by email or phone.
