Mashu (摩周) is the station for the onsen town of Teshikaga (弟子屈) in the eastern part of Akan-Mashu National Park. It is a convenient location for exploring both Mashu-ko and Kussharo-ko by public transport or taxi.

Mashu-ko is up to 211m deep and once the clearest lake in the world. There is not a single river flowing into or out of this mysterious caldera lake. Due to its rugged shore is prohibited to enter, but there are two viewpoints on the western rim for a view over the lake to the picturesque surrounding areas. The lake is often covered in thick fog between spring and summer. Mashu-ko Viewpoint 1 (摩周湖第1展望台) is accessible by bus from the train station.

900 Glassy Meadow

Named after the 930-hectare glassy meadow on the scenic hills, the Q-maru-maru Sogen has a good rural view of the town. It is about 6km south of JR Mashu Station.

This simple and rustic municipal onsen bathhouse is 1km walk south of JR Mashu Station. Admission is only ¥200. Bring your own soap and towel. It will be relocated to the town center in the near future.

Getting There

JR TRAIN

Trains run to Mashu (摩周) on the JR Senmo Line from Kushiro (80min) and Abashiri (2hr). Biruwa (美留和) is one stop north of Mashu.

Getting Around

BUS

From Mashu-eigyosho (摩周営業所) next to Mashu Post Office (10min walk from JR Mashu Station), Akan Bus runs daily to the town of Kawayu-onsengai (40min), stopping at JR Mashu and Kawayu-onsen Stations. On weekdays, there are two buses to Wakoto-hanto (和琴半島) on the southern shore of Kussharo-ko.

BICYCLE

Rental bicycles are available from JR Mashu Station and Lake Mashu Kamuy Terrace (摩周湖カムイテラス) at Mashu-ko Viewpoint 1. Early Jun-early Nov.
