About 45km northeast of Asahikawa along Ishikari-gawa, this small town is a stopover point en route to Sounkyo Onsen, as well as Monbetsu. Also, Kamikawa is known for its tasty ramen.

Kakikawa is renowned for its tasty ramen (ラーメン), which uses local noodles and clear water. The town center has several excellent shokudo and well-priced izakaya tempt you during your stopover or stay.

North of the town center is Kamikawa Park, where Taisetsu Observatory (大雪展望台) is situated on the hilltop overlooking the town and mountains. Cherry trees bloom in mid May. It is a good place for a stroll while waiting for a bus or train. Closed Nov-Apr.

Getting There

JR TRAIN

The closest station to Sounkyo is Kamikawa on the JR Sekihoku Line, about an hour from Asahikawa by local train. There are also the limited express trains from Sapporo (2hr 20min) and Asahikawa (40min).

BUS

Kamikawa Station Mori-no-Terrace bus touch (上川駅前森のテラスバスタッチ) is located beside the train station. There is a ticket window.

From Kamikawa Station, intercity buses run to Monbetsu (2hr) and Obihiro (2hr 45min). Compulsory reservation.

Getting Around

BUS

Dohoku Bus runs between JR Kamikawa Station and Sounkyo (30min), with several buses going directly to/from Asahikawa Station (1hr 20min).
