On the 45th parallel north, Horonobe (幌延) is a dairy town located in the same latitude as Bordeaux in France and Turin in Italy.
This town is the gateway to Sarobetsu Shitsugen’s Horonobe Visitor Center and the reindeer sightseeing farm. Also, it is an important transit point on the JR Soya Line and the Engan Bus Line on the Ororon Line.
Horonobe is a good starting point for explore Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park.

6min by bus from Horonobe Station, get off at Tunakkay-Kanko-bokujo-mae
This farm is located in the hills about 4km north of Horonobe Station, and you can be interacted with about 65 Finnish reindeer. It is recommended to visit in winter. There is also a restaurant. Closed on Monday.

This visitor center introduces the ecosystems of Sarobetsu Shitsugen. From the 25m-high observatory, you can see the wetland and Rishiri-zan. From here, a 3km boardwalk leads to Panke-numa across the two small marshes. Furthermore, you can continue walk to JR Shimonuma Station. Open Apr-Oct.
Kaneda Shinsho Calligraphy Art Museum
金田心象書道美術館
10min walk from Horonobe Station
This art museum showcases some 30 works of Horonobe-born calligrapher Kaneda Shinsho. At the adjacent Horonobu Town Museum (open only on weekdays), you can see trees samples, geological models and archeological finds.

JR TRAIN
Get off the train at Horonobe Station.
● From Sapporo: take the limited express Soya (4hr 16min).
● From Asahikawa: take the limited express (2hr 46min).
● From Nayoro: take the local train (3hr).
● From Wakkanai: take the local train (1hr 10min).
BUS
Engan Bus operates Tokkyu Haboro-go (特急はぼろ号) from Sapporo, stopping at Horonobe Jujigai (幌延十字街: 300m east of the train station near Wakkanai Shinkin Bank) and Horonobe Underground Research Center (幌延深地層研究センター前: 400m north of Reindeer Sightseeing Farm).
Local buses run between Rumoi and Horonobe Underground Research Center, stopping at JR Horonobe Station (3hr 24min) and Tunakkay-Kanko-bokujo-mae.
Getting Around
TAXI
Teshio Hire (天塩ハイヤー幌延支店) is a 2-minute walk from Horonobe Station, opposite the Hokuren gas station. Convenient for access to Horonobe Visitor Center.
BICYCLE
Horokaru (ホロカル) tourist information office inside Horonobe Station offers bike rentals.
