One of Hokkaido’s oldest and largest onsen resorts on the city’s eastern coast, Yunokawa Onsen (湯の川温泉) was used as a hydropathic for injured soldiers following the 1868-1869 Boshin civil war. From summer through winter, you will see fantastic views of isaribi (squid fishing boats’ light) from the coastline.

Sightseeing

Yunokawa’s 10 onsen hotels and ryokan are open for day use to the public (5.30am-11pm). In front of Yunokawa-onsen tram stop, you will find a free footbath (足湯). About a few minutes’ walk south of the tram stop along a small river brings you to the heart of town.

Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden

This indoor tropical botanical garden by the sea introduces palm trees, bananas, lemons and exotic flowers brought up on hot spring heat. From December to early May, Japanese monkeys bathe in an open-air onsen.

Trappistine Convent

Japan’s oldest women’s convent on a scenic hill overlooking the town, the Trappistine Convent was founded in 1898 by eight French nuns. The present red-brick structures were rebuilt in 1927, and its front garden is open to the public. There is also a travelers’ church, shop and gallery. The popular souvenirs here are handmade madeleine and cookies.

One of Hokkaido’s most authentic Japanese gardens in Miharashi Park (見晴公園), Kosetsu-en dates from 1898 by the Iwafune family. The garden features some 150 kinds of trees, a red-brick greenhouse and a tearoom. From late October to early November, Hakodate MOMI-G Festa (autumn-foliage festival) takes place in the garden and trees are illuminated.

Yukura Jinja

Dating from 1617, Yukura Jinja is a historic heart of Yunokawa Onsen on a small hill near Yunokawa tram stop. The present structure was built in 1941 and the grounds have a tiny bamboo glove.

JRA Hakodate Racecourse

There are 25 JRA racecourses in Japan, among them Hakodate is the oldest, which opened in 1896. The main stand has several eateries and an observation deck overlooking the sea. The JRA racing are held on Saturday and Sunday from mid June to mid July.

Getting There

TRAM

Trams run from Hakodate-ekimae (in front of the JR Station) to Yunokawa (32min), stopping at Goryokaku-koen-mae, Keibajo-mae, Komaba-shako-mae and Yunokawa-onsen.

BUS

Yunokawa-onsen bus stop is located in front of the hotel Heiseikan Shiosaitei on Route 278. Buses 95 and 96 run from Hakodate Station Bus Terminal stop 3 (16min) via Takuboku Sho-koen.

The Goryokaku Tower & Trappistine Shuttle Bus (bus 5) stops at Yunokawa-onsen-dentei-mae (tram stop), Yukura-Jinja-mae and the Trappistine-mae at the convent.

Getting Around

BUS

The Traiipstine Convent is best reached by bus from Yunokawa-onsen-tentei-mae (湯川温泉電停前),or Yukura-Jinja-mae (湯倉神社前) bus stop. Yukura-Jinja-mae bus stop is located in front of the grilled restaurant Buzz, about 160m east of Yunokawa tram terminus.

Bus 82 runs from Hakodate Station bus terminal stop 2 to Kosetsu-en (40min) via Yukura-Jinja-mae (10min).
