For most travelers, the main reason to visit Haboro (羽幌) is to catch the ferry to Teuri-to and Yagishiri-to islands. Central Haboro occupies a grid of streets with a few modesty sights.
In the 1960s, Northern Hokkaido’s largest coal mine, about 23km east of the town center, produces more than one million tonnes of coals each years. Those days Haboro was 30,000-strong, today the remains of coal mine sites make another interesting excursion for history enthusiasts.
