Famed for its rural landscapes and as the main setting of the long TV drama series Kita-no-Kuni-kara (From the Northern Country), Rokugo (麓郷) is a lovely agricultural village and 16km southeast of Furano.

Rokugo-based large glass studio can be found beside the Recycled House near the main crossroads, with a wide range of top-quality hand-blown glass crafts in six showrooms. The most famous products are the heat-resistant shibare glasses that sells in the showroom 1. You can take a lesson in glass blowing or make glass accessories.

About 300m east of Rokugo bus stop, these unique houses were setting for the Kita-no-Kuni-kara and the 2002 TV drama. The houses were built with scarp woods, scrapped bus and gondolas.
Forest Museum
森林資料館

Housed in an old work place of the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest built in 1927, this museum has a number of sample woods and rare mushrooms from its own forest. Behind the museum, there is a short trail through the forest of Hakucho-yama. Note: guide tours cannot be visited here. Open on weekdays Apr-Nov.

This lovely forest holds the manmade wooden houses, setting for the Kita-no-Kuni-kara and the 1982 original TV drama. Closed late Nov-mid Apr.
Goro’s Stone House
五郎の石の家

Goro’s ishi-no-ie (stone house) is the iconic symbol of the Kita-no-Kuni-kara and the 1989 TV drama. The house was built by stacking stones excavated from local fields. Closed late Nov-mid Apr.
Furano Jam Garden

On the eastern edge of Rokugo surrounded by the forest, this hidden place is making a great number of organic handmade jam using local berries and vegetables. You can try tasteful soft-serve ice cream topped with jam.
Anpanman Shop

Operated by Furano Jam Garden, this cheerful place on the eastern edge of Rokugo is full of popular anime series Anpanman goods, from picture books to toys. There is also a gallery of Anpanman on the 2nd floor.

Torinuma Park

About 4.5km east of the city center, Furano’s most beautiful forest park features a picturesque pond of spring water. You can hire a rowboat on weekend (late Apr-early Oct). Torinuma 2 (鳥沼2号) bus stop, on the Furano Bus route for Rokugo, is about 600m south of the park.

Rokugo’s only guesthouse is this idyllic family-run place with budget Japanese- and Western-style rooms. There are shared baths and laundries. Meals are using homegrown vegetables. It is 1.6km east of Rokugo bus stop (pick-up is possible, if you request the day before). The Kita-no-Kunikara fans are worth to stay here.

Getting There
BUS
Furano Bus (ふらのバス) runs from JR Furano Station to Rokugo (40min) via Torinuma 2 (鳥沼2号).
Otherwise, Asamachi Line (麻町線) runs between JR Furano Station and Torinuma 7 (鳥沼7号: 30min) via Torinuma 3 (鳥沼3号) in front of Torinuma Park. Note: this bus doesn’t go to Rokugo.
Getting Around

You can hire a bike at the Recycled Houses (拾ってきた家 – やがて町) near Rokugo bus stop. Mid Apr-late Oct.
