The small capital of Hiyama Region on the west coast of the Oshima Peninsula, Esashi (江差) was Hokkaido’s main trading center from 17th- to 19th-century, when Japanese merchants brought herring and woods. Those days this 30,000-strong town was called ‘Even Edo is not as busy as Esashi in May’.
Today the town keeps the wooden houses, shrines and traditional culture. Esashi is also the jump-on and off point for ferries to Okushiri-to.

Sightseeing

The town makes for pleasant strolling beside well preserved homes and office buildings on the Inishie Kaido street, one block south of Route 228. A combination ticket (3施設共通入館券) is available for the the Old Nakamura House, the Old Hiyama-Nishi-gun Government Office and the Old Sekikawa Summer House.

Dating from the late-Edo period, this former wholesaler’s house offers insight into Esashi’s heyday history of trading and herring fishing. The house was right on the waterfront, and a barge of cargo ships landed here.

Once the region’s government office with a police station, Esashi’s historical museum occupies a Western-style beautiful timbered building constructed in 1887. You can tour the restored interior, local-history artifacts and annual events month by month. From the verandah there are views over the town.

Old Sekikawa Summer House

Completed in the late-Edo period, this wooden summer house contains relics of the Sekikawa family, once the richest merchant of the Matsumae clan. The kura (warehouse) is crammed with displays of furnishings. In the grounds there is a Japanese garden (Ezodate Park). It is about a 10-minute walk northeast of the town center.

Esashi Oiwake Hall

One of Japan’s representative folk songs, Esashi Oiwake has been singing from the Edo period. This is a usual venue for performances the Esashi Oiwake and Hokkaido’s major folk songs by local singers three times a day from late April to late October. You can expect to hear the master’s songs from the Meiji period at the reference room. Two gorgeous floats for the local shinto festival also displayed here.

Kaiyo-maru

The Edo shogunate’s battle ship Kaiyo-maru was built in the Netherlands in 1866, but it sank off the coast of Esashi during the Boshin civil war of 1868. This re-created museum ship, berthed outside Kamome-jima, is made up of 3000 historical relics retrieved from the Kaiyo-maru, including the German cannons, pistols and swords.

This seagull-shaped tied island is easily reached on foot from the town center, with small beaches, footpaths, historic sites, a free campsite (mid Apr-mid Oct) and a lighthouse overlooking the town. Joined by a sacred rope, Heishi-iwa (瓶子岩) rock lies just offshore from the sandy beach.

Getting There

BUS

Nakauta-cho (中歌町), located in front of the Esashi Oiwake Hall next to the town hall, is the main bus stop of Central Esashi.

One stop west of Nakauta-cho, Ubagami-cho-Ferry-mae (姥神町フェリー前) is the nearest bus stop of the ferry terminal. Shinchi-cho (新地町) is located near Hotel New Esashi.

Note: Hakodate Bus Esashi Terminal (江差ターミナル) is about 3.5km south of the town center. From Esashi Terminal, a daytime bus to Matsumae (松前) transits Haraguchi-gyoko-mae (原口漁港前).

Buses from Central Esashi (stopping at Nakauta-cho, Ubagami-cho-Ferry-mae, Shinchi-cho and Esashi Terminal):

Bus 610: Hakodate Station (2hr 15min) via Assabu and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station.
Bus 624: Kumaishi (1hr 15min) via Otobe.
Bus 631/632: Kikonai Station (1hr 40min) via Odome (大留: in Kaminokuni) and Yunotai-onsen (湯ノ岱温泉). Bus 632 stops at Kaiyo-maru-kinenkan-mae (開陽丸記念館前).

FERRY

Heartland Ferry (ハートランドフェリー) operates daily car ferries to Okushiri (2hr 20min). The ferry terminal is a 3-minute walk from Ubagami-cho-Ferry-mae (姥神町フェリー前) bus stop.
