Akkeshi (厚岸) is actually the oldest port in Eastern Hokkaido, the Matsumae clan established a trading post in the 1600s. The town is set on a pleasant gulf coast leading to the brackish lake Akkeshi-ko, best-known for both its tasty kaki (oyster) and asari (clam).
The area is designated as Akkeshi-Kiritappu-Konbumori Quasi-National Park (厚岸霧多布昆布森国定公園).

Getting There

JR TRAIN

Trains from Kushiro on the JR Nemuro Line (also called the JR Hanasaki Line) stop at Akkeshi (50min).

BUS

Kushiro Bus 25 runs from Kushiro Station bus terminal stop 9 to Nenohi-koen (子野日公園) via JR Akkeshi Station (1hr 20min), Akkeshi-Gyogyo-Kumiai-Chokubaiten (厚岸漁業組合直売店 A Uroko) and Kokutai-ji.

Getting Around

BUS

On weekdays, Hamanaka Municipal Bus (浜中町営バス) connects Nenohi-koen with Kiritappu Onsen Yuyu (霧多布温泉ゆうゆ) along the coastal road.
