NAKAFURANO

Hokkaido’s most famous flower garden, Farm Tomita is the birthplace of lavender tourism in Furano Region. They started the cultivation of lavender in 1958 on the hillside fields overlooking the Tokachi-dake Mountains, today this farm has a variety of flower gardens not only lavender but also seasonal flowers.

KAMIFURANO

▶︎ 4.5km east of from Farm Tomita

One of Japan’s largest lavender gardens opened in 2008, the Lavender East is about 4.5km east of Farm Tomita. Note that there are no public transport to the garden. Hire a bike in Nakafurano or Kamifurano.

NAKAFURANO

▶︎ 10min walk from JR Nakafurano Station

The town-managed hillside lavender garden is halfway between JR Nakafurano Station and Farm Tomita. For a scenic overviews of town and mountains, take a chairlift (mid Jun-late Aug) or hike to the top of Hokusei-yama (北星山).

KAMIFURANO

▶︎ 15min walk from JR Kamifurano Station

About 1km east of JR Kamifurano Station, this park is covered with lavender on a hill from July to early August. Expect spectacular rural and mountain views from the top. There is an observatory and a car park.

BIEI

▶︎ 30min by bicycle from JR Biei Station / 30min walk from JR Bibaushi Station

Biei’s most popular flower garden on a scenic hill overlooking the Tokachidake Mountains, Shikisai-no-Oka is popular with group tourists in summer. It is about 2km southeast of JR Bibaushi Station.

The city-managed winery sits on a hillside with small lavender gardens and it provides a look into wine-making methods. There are small but scenic lavender gardens behind the winery. It is 2.5km northwest of JR Furano Station.

▶︎ 7.3km northwest of JR Furano Station / 1km walk from Shimanoshita bus stop

About 7km northwest of Central Furano, the city’s largest lavender garden has a public onsen with an open-air bath. The closest bus stop is Shimanoshita (島の下) on the highway bus route between Sapporo and Furano.

FURANO

▶︎ 4.3km east of Rokugo bus stop

Within Furano Jam Garden on a hilltop, you can overlooking the rural landscape of Rokugo from this viewpoint with flower fields. Bike rentals are available at the Recycled Houses (mid Apr-late Oct), about 300m east of Rokugo bus stop.

MINAMIFURANO

▶︎ 5min walk from Shinrin-koen bus stop

Surrounded by beautiful coniferous forest on the shore of the artifical lake Kanayama-ko, this pleasant park has comfortable lodges, campsites and lavender gardens.

KAMIFURANO

▶︎ 20min walk from JR Bibaushi Station

About a 20-minute walk west of JR Bibaushi Station on Route 237, this hillside flower garden is open from early June to mid October. You can see lavender in July.
