On the northern bank of Ishikari-gawa, Tobetsu (当別) is a semi-rural setting on the JR Gakuen-toshi Line, with excellent campsites and a Swedish-style village. King of Sweden Carl Gustaf visited here in 1990.

West of Tobetsu spreads this orderly hillside village surrounded by woods, dotted with wine-red Swedish houses. The centerpiece of the village is the Swedish Center Foundation (スウェーデン交流センター: closed Tue), with an exhibition hall, craft shop and library. About 1km west of the center, Leksand Memorial Park (レクサンド記念公園) offering views over Sapporo and the Ishikari Bay.
Tobetsu Date Museum & Old Guest House

This modest museum has a compact display of historical clothing, kimono and archives related to the Iwadeyama-Date family. The adjacent Date Family’s wooden guest house (built in 1880) has a mix of Japanese- and Western-style meeting rooms.

This modern michi-on-eki (roadside station) on Route 337 specialities in dishes prepared using Tobetsu-ground produce, with plenty of take-away shops and a farmers market. It is about 1.8km south of Futomi Station.

Getting There
JR TRAIN
The JR Gakuen-toshi Line runs from Sapporo through Tobetsu (40min) to Hokkaido-iryo-daigaku (北海道医療大学), stopping at ROYCE’ Town (ロイズタウン) and Futomi (太美).
BUS
The municipal bus Toberu-go (とべーる号) runs from JR Tobetsu Station south gate to Tsukigata-eki via JR Hokkaido-iryo-daigaku Station (北海道医療大学).
Getting Around
BUS
Tobetsu Fureai Bus (当別ふれあいバス) has four lines in town. Most buses depart from Futomi or Tobetsu Stations. The fare is flat ¥200. You can purchase a one-day pass (1日乗車券: ichi-nichi joshaken) from the driver.
