Shinshinotsu Onsen Tappu-no-yu ♨︎

18min by bus from Kami-Horomui Station
Located on the shore of Shinotsu-ko, this onsen offers 100% free-flowing yellow-brown hot spring baths, including a wide open-air bath. The Tappu-no-yu is in the same building as the michi-no-eki. There is also a private bath and a lake-view restaurant.

This crescent-shaped lake is a superb spot for fishing and camping. The most popular activity here is wakasagi-tsuri (ワカサギ釣り: smelt fishing) on the frozen lake in winter. If you bring your wakasagi to the onsen restaurant Enishi, the staff will be cooked into tempura (meal order is required).

Adjoining the Tappu-no-yu, Shinotsu Park’s campground offers a rental tent, sleeping bag, barbecue tool and free rent-a-cycle. It can be crowded with families on weekend. A small observatory has good views over the village.

18min by bus from Kami-Horomui Station
This lakeside onsen is a good place for a soak after activities. It has lake-front Japanese- and Western-style rooms. There is an excellent onsen with wide open-air baths.

Getting There
JR TRAIN
Shinshinotsu’s nearest train station is unstaffed Kami-Horomui (上幌向) in Iwamizawa on the JR Hakodate Line.
From Sapporo, take the Iwamizawa-bound local train to Kami-Horomui (35min), then catch the municipal bus to Tappu-no-yu (see below).
BUS
Shinshinotsu Kotsu (新篠津交通) buses run between Iwamizawa Terminal stop 9 and Shinshinotsu-onsen Tappu-no-yu (30min) via Kami-Horomui Station (18min).
Getting Around
BUS
On weekdays except school holidays, New Shinotsu Bus (ニューしのつバス) runs to Shinshinotsu-yakuba-mae (新篠津役場前) at the village hal from Ebetsu Station (40min) and Tsukigata (23min).
