Halfway between Tomakomai and Erimo, Hidaka Region’s largest town of Shinhidaka (新ひだか) is the base of visit the engaging racehorse stables. Around Golden Week (late April to early May), Nijukken Road is full of cherry blooms along with local day-trippers.

Nujukken Road (meaning 36m-width road) is Central Hokkaido’s top cherry-blossom destination. For a few weeks from early to mid May, about 10,000 trees bloom a 8km-long road in the Niikappu Farm founded in 1872. The town’s modern red brick museum houses a one-room exhibition provides a history of Shizunai and Mitsuishi from ancient times. There is also a pleasant library on-site. It is about 1km northwest of Shizunai bus terminal, right side of Yamate Park.

Sits a hilltop Mauta Park (真歌公園), one-room exhibits are items of gear, extinct Hokkaido wolf skull, restored thatched house and oceangoing vessel. Here was the site of Ainu’s Shibechari Fortress used until the mid 17th-century. Approximately 3km east of Shizunai Station. Don’t miss the great Shakushain Statue (英傑シャクシャイン像), the legeldary local Ainu chief.

From November to March, you will see lovely swans and mallards on the bank of Shizunai-gawa backed by the snow-capped Hidaka Mountains. The square is about 1km east of Shizunai bus terminal.

BUS
Shizunai bus terminal is inside the former train station.
Donan Bus Kosoku Pegasus-go (高速ペガサス号) runs between Sapporo Station and Shizunai (2hr 40min), stopping at Suehiro-cho (末広町) near the town museum. Compulsory reservation by the day before. There are also local buses between Tomakomai Station and Shizunai (2hr 35min), stopping at JR Numanohata Station north gate (沼ノ端駅北口), JR Mukawa Station (鵡川駅前), Suehiro-cho (末広町), Miyuki-cho (御幸町) and Shizunai-Honcho (静内本町).
JR Bus Tokkyu Tomamo-go (特急とまも号) runs between Tomakomai Station south gate and Shizunai (1hr 45min), stopping at Suehiro-cho. Compulsory reservation. IC cards are available (JR passes are not available).
Getting Around
BUS
From Shizunai, both Donan and JR buses run to Urakawa (浦河), stopping at Shizunai-Honcho (静内本町), Irifune-cho (入舟町) and Shizunai-onsen (静内温泉).
For Shizunai Nijukken Road, take a local bus for Noya (農屋) from Shizunai and get off at Sakuraoka-shogakko (桜丘小学校), then a 18-minute walk.
