At the foot of Shiribetsu-dake, the small agricultural village of Rusutsu (ルスツ · 留寿都) is one of Hokkaido’s main ski resorts comparable to the Niseko United: there are 42km slopes covering 37 runs.

This massive highland resort offers a number of family-oriented attractions throughout the year. In winter, the ski resort (late Nov-early Apr) laid out the area’s three mountains, with a total of 37 slopes and 18 lifts, look over Yōtei-zan and Tōya-ko. From late April to mid October, you can ride the extreme roller coasters and a gondola at the amusement park.

After a day of play, the Westin Rusutsu Resort offers modern onsen, including an open-air bath. It is free for the resort hotel guests (except the Vale Rusutsu) and is closed during the off-seasons.

About 2km west of Rusutsu Resort on Route 230, this michi-no-eki (roadside station) has an excellent farmers market that is open all-year round. You will find a plenty of local produce, such as potatoes, white radishes, carrots and yams. Highly recommended for self-caterers.
