Makkari is best explored on two wheels. Hire a bicycle from the michi-no-eki (or get off the bus at Hikari) and explore around this picturesque district (about 3km east of the center) with vista over the picturesque countryside, known as the setting for the TV drama Massan (マッサン).
Yotei-zan Natural Park

At the Makkari trailhead for the summit of Yotei-zan, you can pitch a tent or a 1.5-hour hike to neighboring Minami-Kobu-yama (南コブ山: 650m) with a good view. The climbing season starts around mid June. Allow three to five hours climb to reach the summit. The Exhibition Hall of the Forest (森林学習展示館) offers a rental tent and sleeping bag.
Makkari Onsen ♨︎

2km west of Makkari bus stop
About 2km west of the center, this hillside onsen boasts the excellent view of Yotei-zan from an open-air bath. There are five cottages adjoining the onsen.

Donan Bus runs to Makkari from JR Kutchan Station (38min) and Rusutsu Resort (16min), stopping at Yotei-shizen-koen-iriguchi (羊蹄自然公園入口), Nishiki-machi (錦町), Makkari-kominkan-mae (真狩公民館前) and Hikari (光).
