The subprefectural capital of Shiribeshi Region, Kutchan (倶知安) serves as a transport hub for the bustling ski resort on the Niseko Mountains, or as a base for trips around Yōtei-zan, Rusutsu Resort and the Shakotan Peninsula’s west coast.
Kutchan has some museums, restaurants, shops and night spots within walking distance from the train station. In winter the town is covered with deep snow.

Famed for its world-class ski resort, the Niseko Mountains contain gentle peaks above 1000m. The area’s best ski slopes, onsen, hiking trails, picturesque marshes, luxury accommodation and dining options sprawl over the highest peak of Niseko Annupuri overlooking the stunning Yōtei-zan (Ezo-Fuji).

10min by bus from Kutchan Station, get off at Shirakaba-danchi, then 10min walk
About 2.5km northeast of the train station, this interesting museum (called Fudokan) gives a history and nature of Kutchan, Niseko and Yōtei-zan. Among the displays are folk materials, skiing, lifestyle in the the Shōwa period, local fauna and flora.

Right opposite the Fudokan, this small art museum showcases the work of Kutchan-born and based painter Ogawara Shū (1911-2002). His landscape paintings include the Niseko Mountains and India. You can see Yōtei-zan from the lobby. Tickets also include entry to the Kutchan Fūdokan.
