About 45km east of Sapporo, Kuriyama (meaning ‘chestnut mountain’) is a neat agricultural town. The town is famous for both its sake and kibi-dango (rectangular millet dumpling).

Kobayashi Sake Brewery

Kobayashi is Hokkaido’s oldest exiting sake brewer established in 1878, this atmospheric place has 18 stone and red-brick sakagura (sake warehouses). The Kita-no-Nishiki Memorial Hall (北の錦記念館) exhibits items of about 5000 artistic drinking vessels and living tools, with a tasting room in an old office building (built in 1944). You will find soba and French restaurants on the ground.

Inside Kobayashi Sake Brewery
Built in 1897, the Kobayashi House inside the sake brewery is now a pleasant tea room with a shop. The Japanese-speaking guided tours (price incl tea and sweets) show you around the wooden house, so we suggest having a Japanese person call to reserve by the day before. Closed Wed

27min walk or 10min by bus from Kuriyama Station
It is an inconvenient about 30-minute walk (or 10-minute by bus) from JR Kuriyama Station on Route 234, but rewarded with a rustic onsen with open-air baths. The closest bus stop is Asahi 3 (旭3丁目).
