The southernmost town of Central Hokkaido, Erimo (えりも) is well-known for its scenic cape juts out into the Pacific Ocean. The coastal road between Samani and Hiroo skirts the edges of long panoramic beaches. This town is far away from any cities but makes a good place to meet the natural wonders.

Erimo-misaki

えりも岬

2min walk from Erimo-misaki bus stop

At the southern tip of the Hidaka Mountains, Erimo-misaki (meaning beautiful form in Ainu) is one of Hokkaido’s greatest capes jut out into the Pacific. The cape is surrounded by the 60m-high stunning cliffs, and the Hidaka Mountains continue to the seabed. If you are lucky, zenigata-azarashi (harbor seals) are visible on the rocks through binoculars.

Kaze-no-Yakata

風の館

2min walk from Erimo-misaki bus stop

Erimo-misaki is known as Japan’s most windy point on the level. If the weather is bad, this semi-underground house at the cape offers a comfortable indoor observatory overlooking the sea. There are binoculars for observing harbor seals. You can experience artificial strong wind inside the tunnel, and the wind speed is 25 meters per second.

Hyakunin-hama

百人浜

4min walk from Hyakunin-hama bus stop

Stretches from Erimo-misaki to the fishing village of Shoya, Hyakunin-hama is a 15km-long sandy beach. Strong currents prohibit swimming, but it is a good spot to surfing. From the Meiji to early Showa periods, the coastal hills were deforested by development and were called Erimo Desert. Therefore the greening project began in 1953, and the hills are covered with rich black pine forest today.
