Approximately 20 minutes train ride east of Sapporo, Ebetsu (江別) is the region’s second-largest city and famous for its renga (red-brick) manufacturing dates back to 1891. More than 400 old and new red-brick buildings are scattered throughout the city.

Nopporo (野幌) is de facto city center of Ebetsu and home to red-brick manufacturing. There are some impressive red-brick buildings around the train station.

Housed in a classic old red-brick factory built in 1942, this shopping complex includes food markets, restaurants, general shops, a cafe and an antenna shop. There are also made-in-Ebetsu souvenirs and ceramics. It is about a 5-minute walk northeast of JR Nopporo Station south gate along the railway track.

About 3.5km south of JR Nopporo Station, this comprehensive center showcases the contemporary styles of Hokkaido’s ceramic arts. The other main exhibition hall introduces the history of renga (red-brick) industry in Hokkaido from the late Edo period. An attached shop sells local potter and glassmakers’ work. You can see the vast forest from the observation tower.

Ebetsu City Glass Studio

This red-brick studio was built in 1945 as a Western-style president residence of the local red-brick factory. The glass-blowers works are on display in the studio of the glassmaker Kakizaki Hitoshi. You can take a glass-blowing course (book ahead by phone) from May to October.

This atmospheric shrine was established in 1889 by Nopporo’s tondenhei (agriculture soldiers). The present building was built in 1940 to honor Sugawara Michizane, a famous scholar in the Heian period. Right side of the shrine is Ebetsu City Tonden Museum (29 Apr-3 Nov), Hokkaido’s oldest existing tondenhei headquarters built in 1884, with dioramas showing agriculture soldier’s life.

Established in 1933 as a Danish-style dairy farming school, Rakunō Gakuen is one of Japan’s widest private universities and the scenic avenues in the grounds are open to all. Wander around Shirakaba-dori (白樺通り: white beech avenue) and the red-brick dorm of Seino-ryo (精農寮: built in 1945) near Rakuno-gakuen-mae bus stop. You can purchase ice cream, milk and cheese at the coop on-site (10am-3pm weekday).

Ebetsu City Museum

This museum has exhibits on the history and culture of the city, which presents some 400 Ebetsu-style earthenwares, Ainu artifacts, agricultural soldiers, water transportation, ceramics and paper industry. Look for the archives of the wooden fighter Ki-106 that flew over Ebetsu in 1945.

Old Machimura Farm

Getting There

JR TRAIN

There is frequent local train service between Sapporo and Ebetsu (25min), stopping at Oasa, Nopporo and Takasago. Nopporo Station is the most convenience base for explore the city.

BUS

Prepaid IC cards are available except the Yutetsu Bus (夕鉄バス). JR passes are available for the JR Bus.

From Shin-Sapporo Station (新札幌駅) on the JR Chitose Line and the Tozai subway line, the following buses run for Ebetsu:

Chuo Bus 5/55/60 runs to Ebetsu Station via 3-ban-dori-19 (3番通19丁目), Dai-3-chugakko (第3中学校), Wakakusa-cho (若草町) and Ebetsu-shiritsu-byoin (江別市立病院).

JR Bus 25/26 runs to Ebetsu Station via Oasa Station south gate (大麻駅南口), Rakuno-gakuen-mae (酪農学園前) and Nopporo Station north gate (野幌駅北口) via Route 12.

JR Bus 29 runs to Nopporo Sports Park (野幌運動公園) via Oasa Station south gate, Rakuno-gakuen-mae, Nopporo Station south gate (野幌駅南口) and Ceramic-Art-Center-mae (セラミックアートセンター前).

Yutetsu Bus runs to Nanporo-higashi-machi (南幌東町), stopping at Nopporo bus terminal (野幌バスターミナル) near the Ebri.

Chuo Bus 22/24 runs between JR Oasa Station (north gate) and JR Ebetsu Station, stopping at 3-ban-dori-9 (3番通9丁目) except bus 24, Nopporo Station north gate (野幌駅北口), Wakakusa-cho (若草町) and Ebetsu-shiritsu-byoin (江別市立病院).

BICYCLE

You can rent bikes (called EBE-CLE) at Ebetsu Citizens Activity Center (江別市民交流センターぷらっと). The reception is next door to the Hotel Reborn in front of JR Nopporo Station south gate. Bring ID. Late Apr-late Oct.
