South of Toya-ko facing the Uchiura Bay, Date is a coastal agricultural city rooted in the culture of the Ainu and samurai. Cherry blossoms come out in early May.

Tateyama Park is situated on a hill (former Ainu fortress) overlooking the city and ocean. Locals enjoy cherry-blossom viewing with picnic boxes here. The entrance is about 500m north of JR Date-Monbetsu Station adjoining the Eneos gas station.

About 1km west of Tateyama Park, Route 37 crosses over Date Cycle Path (5.4km) lined with cherry trees. The countryside Date Onsen (伊達温泉) offers a basic indoor bath and a garden-style open-air bath.

About 2km northwest of JR Date-Monbetsu Station along the cycle path, this countryside public onsen offers a basic indoor bath and a garden-style open-air bath. The closest bus stop is Tateyama-shita (館山下) on the bus route to Toyako-onsen (on Minami-Odori) or Toyoura-onsen (Route 37).

One of Hokkaido’s most atmospheric temples stand by the pretty harbor, Usu Zenkō-ji has a history stretching back to 826. The temple is planned with a number of cherry trees, especially the Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree (ishiwari-zakura) is sprouted from the crack in a huge cinder of the 1822 Usu-zan eruption.
