Bibai (美唄) was once Hokkaido’s second-largest coal mining city sits halfway between Sapporo and Asahikawa, on Japan’s longest straight road (29.2km!). In the 1950s, about 90,000 people lived here, but the underground coal mine was closed in 1973.
Today the city is putting effort into agriculture and tourism.

Sightseeing

Yakitori (焼き鳥: skewered grilled chicken) is a popular local speciality from the late 19th-century. Try the motsu-kushi (モツ串: various meat of yakitori).

Arte Piazza Bibai

The photogenic sculpture park of Arte Piazza is located inside the old wooden elementary school built in the colliery-era, it exhibits the marble work of Bibai-born famous sculptor Yasuda Kan in the classrooms and open-air grounds setting.

Miyajima-numa

30min by bus from Iwamizawa Station, get off at Otomi, then 17min walk


This 30-hectare circular marsh is Japan’s largest and northernmost nesting site for magan (white-fronted goose). Approximately 50 thousand birds come here in mid to late April, and late September to mid October. Optimal birdwatching timing is dawn or dusk. The Waterbird and Wetland Center (宮島沼水鳥・湿地センター) with displays and maps. You can get there by bus from Iwamizawa or Tsukigata.

The Yurin-kan features a cave-like open-air bath with rural views. It has a modern hotel, restaurant and park golf links. Local buses run from JR Bibai Station.

If you have a chance to visit Bibai in early to mid May, stretch your legs to Sorachi’s top cherry-blossom viewing spot on a hill. There is an observation tower with a great view. It is next to the Yurin-kan (about 1.5km northwest of the Arte Piazza).

Old Sakurai House

Built from 1901 to 1933, this nostalgic wooden house belonged to Sakurai family who served as the mayors of Bibai. There is also a small house of agriculture soldiers (美唄屯田兵屋) on the grounds, built in 1893.

Getting There

JR TRAIN

JR Bibai Station is stops for the limited express trains from Sapporo (35min) and Asahikawa (50min). Local trains run from Iwamizawa (15min).

BUS

Bibai Municipal Bus (美唄市民バス) operates several city lines from JR Bibai Station west gate.

The East Line (市民バス東線) makes a convenient loop on the eastern side of the city, stopping at Arte Piazza (アルテピアッツァ) and Yurin-kan (ゆ〜りん館).

BICYCLE

Rent bikes (レンタサイクル) are available at Pipa-no-yu Yurin-kan. Mid Apr-late Nov.
