Hakodate to Onuma on the Kameda Peninsula | Bus Trip

The Kameda Peninsula, juts into the Pacific Ocean on the east coast of Hakodate, is an unknown jewel to most international tourists. The sacred mountain E-san is the highlight of the peninsula. Onuma Quasi-National Park is Southern Hokkaido’s top resort that offers graceful holiday, such as cycling and skiing.

Hakodate Tabisuru Passport (はこだて旅するパスポート): This transit pass covers unlimited travel on one- or two-day on the Hakodate Bus, tram, JR and South Hokkaido Railway in Hakodate and its surrounding areas including the Kameda Peninsula. Purchase at the JR ticket offices in Southern Hokkaido.



One of Japan’s first international trade ports opened in 1854, Hakodate is a romantic port town with an East-meets-West culture, historic buildings, lively markets, fresh seafood and coastal onsen. Motomachi district on a scenic hillside keeps a nostalgic atmosphere.

Hakodate Station to Yunokawa Onsen

From Hakodate Station bus terminal stop 3, take the Hakodate Bus 95 or 96 to Yunokawa Onsen (18min) on Route 278. Hakodate Bus 91 and 91A for Esan-Misaki (恵山御崎) stops at Yunokawa Onsen dentei-mae (湯川温泉電停前) near the tram stop. Tram is also available between Hakodate Station and Yunokawa Onsen (30min) via Goryokaku Koen-mae.


Yunokawa Onsen

One of Hokkaido’s oldest and largest onsen resorts on the city’s eastern coast, Yunokawa Onsen was used as a hydropathic for injured soldiers following the 1868-1869 Boshin civil war. Today there are about 20 onsen accommodation.

Yunokawa Onsen to Esan (E-san) or Todohokke

Hakodate Bus 91 and 91A runs along the Tsugaru Strait and the seven man-made tunnels (carved in 1929) in Hiura (日浦) along the Tsugaru Strait. The coastal Esan Kaihin Park, also called ‘Hokkaido’s Hawaii’, is just a short walk from the Natowa-Esan-mae (なとわえさん前) bus stop.
If you plan to head north to Todohokke Shisho-mae (椴法華支所前) from Hakodate or Esan, change buses at Hinohama Danchi (日の浜団地).


E-san (Esan)

E-san (618m) is a singular active volcano that is sacred place from the past. Esan Onsen trailhead is a 20-minute walk from Esan Tozanguchi (恵山登山口) bus stop on the coastline. Return hike from the bus stop allow four to five hours.

Todohokke to Minamikayabe

If you get off the bus at Todohokke Shisho-mae (椴法華支所前) from Hinohama Danchi, catch bus 99A or 99B for Hakodate Station via Minamikayabe Shisho-mae (南茅部支所前). The bus passes through the unusual coastline and several fishing villages.



Minamikayabe (南茅部) is home of the Jomon-era (2000 to 9000 years ago) culture and archaeological finds in Southern Hokkaido. As the town is famous for its high-quality konbu (seaweed).
From Minamikayabe Shisho-mae (南茅部支所前), take bus 99, 223 or 225 for Shikabe Shutchojo (鹿部出張所). Otherwise, you can go back to Hakodate by bus 99A or 99B.



On the eastern side of Koma-ga-take, Shikabe (鹿部)is a small coastal onsen town. All buses for Shikabe from Minamikayabe pause at the Michi-no-eki Shikabe Kanketsusen Koen (道の駅しかべ間歇泉公園) geyser park.
From here, bus 210 runs three daily to Hakodate Station via Onuma-koen. Buses 210 and 211 head to Shikabe Station (鹿部駅前: 3-6 daily / 21min) on the local train route between Onuma and Mori on the JR Hakodate Line.


Onuma Park

Onuma Park is Southern Hokkaido’s most popular and picturesque resort that is designated as a quasi-national park. The volcanic mountain Koma-ga-take and its peaceful lakes offer good for picnic, cruise, camping, cycling and hiking.
From Onuma-koen station, both the JR train and bus 210 runs to Hakodate via Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station on the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
