Tokyo to Aomori by local train (via JR Joban Line, JR Tohoku Line, JR Hanawa Line and JR Ou Line). The seasonal Hokkaido & East Japan Pass is a good option if you travel on the IGR Iwate Galaxy Railway and the Aoimori Railway.

Cheap Train Tickets & Rail Passes
Ordinary ticket (over 101 kilometers)
Good value. You can get off the train many times in one direction from the departure station to the arrival station. JR East Tohoku Shinkansen is available for an additional fee.
● A special limited express ticket between Morioka and Shin-Aomori is required to board the Tohoku Shinkansen (¥2640).

Seishun 18 Kippu
The most popular seasonal rail pass with Japanese tourists, the Seishun 18 Kippu is five flexible days of unlimited travel on local and rapid trains for ¥12,050. It can be shared up to five people. A supplement is payable on the reserved seat (ordinary class) and non-reserved Green Car.
● The IGR Iwate Galaxy Railway (Morioka – Metoki) and the Aoimori Railway (Metoki – Hachinohe) are not available with the Seishun 18 Kippu. The Seishun 18 holders need to purchase a Morioka–Hachinohe ticket (¥3110: valid for 2 days and stopovers are available).
● If you take the JR Hanawa Line from / to Morioka with the Seishun 18 Kippu, purchase a Morioka–Koma ticket on the IGR Iwate Galaxy Railway (¥660).
● The Seishun 18 holders can be take the local and rapid trains (non-reserved seats) between Aomori and Hachinohe on the Aoimori Railway without extra costs. Stopovers are available only at Aomori, Noheji and Hachinohe stations.

Hokkaido & East Japan Pass
This seasonal rail pass allows unlimited travel on the JR Hokkaido lines and the JR East Japan lines. In addition to it allows unlimited travel on the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line (Muikamachi – Saigata), the IGR Iwate Galaxy Railway (Morioka – Metoki) and the Aoimori Railway (Metoki – Aomori).
