Eastern Hokkaido’s first onsen town founded in 1883, Teshikaga (弟子屈) is a convenient location for exploring both Mashu-ko and Kussharo-ko by public transport or taxi. Mashu Station (摩周駅) on the Senmo Line is a gateway of the town center.
Some onsen minshuku and hotels’ baths can be used during the day (¥300), ask for staff or the tourist information desk.
900 Glassy Meadow
(900草原) Named after the 930-hectare glassy meadow on the scenic hills, the Q-maru-maru Sogen (キューマルマル草原) has a good rural view of the town. It is about 6km south of JR Mashu Station, there is a jumbo taxi for Teshikaga Eco-Passport holders from mid June to early October.
(泉の湯) This simple and rustic municipal onsen bathhouse is a 10-minute walk south of JR Mashu Station. Admission is only ¥200. Bring your own soap and towel.
If you are arriving at Mashu by train, pick up helpful maps, brochures and bus schedules at the tourist information desk of JR Mashu Station. Staff sells the Teshikaga Eco Passport and snacks. There is a free open-air ashi-yu (footbath; 24hrs) outside the train station.
Across from JR Mashu Station, Mashu Hire (摩周ハイヤー) can arrange taxi tours as you like or driver’s top choice. Make a booking online via its website.
