Hoheikyo Onsen (豊平峡温泉) is known as Sapporo’s best onsen with 100% free-flowing hot sulfur spring, the large-scale open-air bath has good views of the mountains and starry sky. Indian cuisine is speciality of this place. It is also offering canoeing and rafting tours on the river from two people.

Hoheikyo Dam

(豊平峡ダム) Northern end of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, this 102.5m-high arch dam is situated in the valley of Toyohira-gawa and a picturesque place for viewing the autumn leaves.

The entrance gate of Hiyamizu Tunnel (冷水トンネル) is about 3km south of Hoheikyo Onsen. There are no regular buses to the tunnel, but shuttle buses from Jozankei will be run from mid September to late October. From the entrance gate, take the hybrid electric bus (return ¥640) to the dam site.

Getting There

From Sapporo Station bus terminal stop 12, Jotetsu Bus 7 (6 daily; 1.5hrs) and the comfy Kappa Liner (7 daily; 70min; reserved-seat) runs to Hoheikyo Onsen (¥960) via Jozankei.
