At Horobetsu Station, the limited express train Suzuran (between Sapporo and Muroran) and local trains stop here. There is a ticket window and an automatic ticket vending machines on the second floor. There are no coin lockers. In winter, illuminations are lit up in the square in front of the station after sunset.

From Horobetsu Station west gate, you can see Mt. Washibetsu-dake (also known as Mt. Muroran-dake), which is 911m above sea level, directly ahead. Walk along this street for about 5 minutes, cross Raiba-gawa River, and then turn diagonally right at the five-way intersection. You will soon see Wakasaya.

To get to Horobetsu Station, take the limited express train Suzuran from Sapporo (1hr 20min), or local train from Tomakomai (50min), or local train from Noboribetsu (8min). Note that the limited express train Hokuto doesn’t stop here.

This is a long-established sweet shop in Noboribetsu. The store has a nostalgic appearance and a tasteful signboard. It’s located in a residential area, so it may be a little hard to find at first. Apparently, quite a few people come from Sapporo to buy their products in search of the homemade taste.

Teyaki-imo” (手焼いも: hand-baked sweet potato) and “imoten” (いもてん: deep-fried Teyaki-imo), which won the Honorary Gold Award and the All Japan Confectionery Exposition Chairman’s Award at the National Confectionery Exposition, were first sold at the end of the Meiji period and are all handmade.

Wakasaya is about 500m (7min walk) from Horobetsu Station west gate. It is closed only on January 1st.

On the way back to Horobetsu Station from Wakasaya, I happened to come across this sweets shop in the shopping center Anis (アーニス). The shop is located at the entrance on the Raiba Park side.

Kameya’s “Lemon Cake” is made with flour, sugar, and butter produced in Hokkaido, and is filled with lemon chocolate. They also have cakes and Noboribetsu Milk Castella (登別牛乳カステラ).

Kameya is about 250m (4min walk) from Horobetsu Station west gate. Closed on Thursdays, January 1st and 2nd. There may be other temporary closures.
