Higashi-Muroran is the main terminal for the industrial city of Muroran. 737 series local trains run from Sapporo, Tomakomai, and Chitose.

This is the west gate of Higashi-Muroran Station. The souvenir kiosk Hokkaido Shikisaikan on the 2nd floor sells Muroran specialties.

To get to Higashi-Muroran Station, take the limited express train from Sapporo (1hr 30min), or local train from Tomakomai (60min), or local train from Noboribetsu (16min).


A small restaurant district is located immediately to the right after exiting the west exit of Higashi-Muroran Station. It is lined with ramen, taiyaki and yakitori shops with a nostalgic atmosphere.

You will find Miyanomori Rakuraku Onsen (bathhouse) along Nakajima Washibetsu Odori, a 5-minute walk from Higashi-Muroran Station west gate.


This is one of Muroran’s most famous shrines near Higashi-Mmuroran Station west gate, so you can visit while waiting for a train. The crowds at the first shrine visit of the year were greater than expected.

The shrine grounds are the former site of the Wanishi Tondenhei Village company headquarters, which was relocated in 1897. The former Tondenhei gunpowder storehouse is preserved along the approach to the shrine.

Nakajima Shrine is 650m (10min walk) from the west exit of Higashi-Muroran Station. It takes about 30 minutes round trip on foot from the station.
