Sandwiched between the Tsugaru Strait and Hakodate-yama, Yachigashira (谷地頭) can be easily explored on foot from Motomachi historic district.
01 CULTURAL PARK & CHERRY-BLOSSOM VIEWING

One of Japan’s first urban parks landscaped by citizen and opened in 1879, this ocean-view place has a fountain, museum, small zoo and amusement park with Japan’s oldest Ferris wheel (1950). There are also two historic old city museums built between 1879 and 1884. Cherry trees bloom in late April to early May, and they are lit up at night. Hakodate Park is a 2-minute walk from Aoyagicho-tram stop.

Hakodate City Museum

This long-running museum in Hakodate Park, established in 1879, showcases the varied collection of Hakodate and Hokkaido, such as old coins, pictures, stuffed animals, specimen plants and historic materials.
函館八幡宮 / 2-5 Yachigashira-cho / 24hrs / FREE
Set at the foot of Hakodate-yama surrounded by the ceder forest, this tasteful place, built in 1915, is the major Hachiman-gu shrine in Hokkaido. It is a few minutes’ walk from Hakodate Park or Yachigashira tram stop.
04 MEMORIAL MONUMENT
碧血碑 / 1 Yachigashira-cho / 24hrs
This hidden memorial was erected in 1875 for the 796 soldiers of the old Tokugawa shogunate armies who perished in the Boshin civil war of 1869.
05 PUBLIC ONSEN

Hakodate’s most popular public onsen is the perfect place for a soak after stroll or arrive in Hakodate early in the morning. It has a large-scale indoor bath and a five-star-shaped open-air bath, with yellowish brown hot water. You can purchase amenities (tebura set) for ¥500.
06 SCENIC CAPE

About a 15-minute walk south of Yachigashira tram stop, Tachimachi-misaki is located at the southeastern edge of Hakodate-yama, from where you can overlooking the coastline and the Tsugaru Strait. A 4km-long hiking trail along the ridge line to Hakodate-yama begin near the cape.
Trams run to Yachigashira (谷地頭) from Hakodate Station (13min) via Jujigai (8min). The last tram from Yachigashira back to Yunokawa is 10.08pm.
