Best known for both dramatic cliffs and cobalt blue ocean, the Shakotan Peninsula (積丹半島) juts out into the Sea of Japan on the northwest of Yoichi. The peninsula’s northernmost area boasts clear cobalt blue ocean with panoramic viewpoints. It is also famous for its uni (sea urchin). You can easily make a day trip from Otaru to the east coast of the peninsula.

01 SCENIC VIEWPOINT
Most of Chinese travelers associate the kanji name of Bikuni (美国) with USA, this fishing town is the center of Shakotan-cho (積丹町). A hilltop cape Kogane-misaki (黄金岬) overlooking the blue ocean and the ‘Treasure Island’ of Takara-jima (宝島), the entrance is left behind the town hall facing the national route.
02 SCENIC VIEWPOINT
島武意海岸 / Irika-cho, Shakotan-cho / 24hrs
About a 15-minute hike up from Shimamui-kaigan-iriguchi bus stop and pass through a narrow tunnel, you can overlooking brilliant blue ocean with unusual rocks and countless seabirds.
Shakotan-misaki Nature Trail
積丹岬自然遊歩道 / 4.7km (1.5hrs)
connects Shimamui car park and 650m west of Shakotan-Horomui bus stop, with great views and scenic places.
04 SCENIC CAPE
神威岬 / Kozaki-cho, Shakotan-cho / 8am-dusk Apr-Nov, 10am-3pm Dec-Mar / FREE
The northwestern edge of the peninsula is a 100m-high impressive rocky cape of Kamui-misaki, where was a military fortless until WWII. A 50-minute return Charenka Trail (8am-dusk / Closed windy day) extend from the car park to the lighthouse. Seasonal buses for Kamui-misaki run from late April to late October.

Chuo Bus operates highway buses Kosoku Shakotan-go (高速しゃこたん号) daily run between Sapporo Station and Bikuni (2 daily / 2hrs 20min) via Otaru Station and Yoichi Station. From late April to late October, a highway bus from Sapporo (depart at 9.15am) continues to Kamui-misaki (3hrs 13min / skips at Horomui).
Chuo Bus 20 runs between Otaru Station and Bikuni (美国: 8 daily / 83min). Chuo Bus 21 runs between Otaru Station and Shakotan Yobetsu (積丹余別: 5 daily / 2hrs 13min / ¥1730); three buses continue to Kamui-misaki (2hrs 18min; ¥1780) from late April to late October. All buses are stopping at Yoichi Station.
From late April to late October, there are two buses daily between Iwanai (岩内) and Kamui-misaki (1hr 38min).
