After passing through the dynamic Sekihoku Pass on Route 39 from Daisetsuzan National Park, Onneyu is a popular onsen village to break up a journey for Kitami or Akan-ko. There are a few onsen lodging along Muka-gawa.

This small but unique aquarium displays of Hokkaido’s freshwater fishes in impressive tanks, such as an artificial waterfall and rivers, which grown up by onsen water. In winter, you can see fishes from under the frozen open-air tank. Don’t miss ito (hucho perryi: species of freshwater salmon), Japan’s largest freshwater fish. The aquarium is opposite the Michi-no-eki Onneyu Onsen.

On the pleasant Muka-gawa riverside setting, this well-established 10-storey purple hotel features large-scale onsen with 100% hot water. Get off the intercity or local bus at Onneyu, and a few minutes’ walk to the hotel.

GETTING THERE & AROUND
Limited express trains make the trip to Rubeshibe on the JR Sekihoku Line from Sapporo (4hrs), Asahikawa (2.5hrs) and Abashiri (1hr). From Rubeshibe, Kitami Bus (www.h-kitamibus.co.jp) run to the Michi-no-eki Onneyu Onsen (道の駅おんねゆ温泉) at the roadside station (20min). All buses to Onneyu depart from Kitami.
From Onneyu (温根湯) bus stop near the Onsen Yume Hiroba (温泉ゆめ広場), intercity buses (compulsory reservation) run to Asahikawa (via Sounkyo) and Kushiro (via Akan-ko).
